HOW TO REMOVE MAKEUP PROPERLY: 5 EASY MAKEUP-REMOVAL TIPS

There’s not much you can do to your skin that’s worse than going to bed with your makeup on, but not knowing how to remove makeup properly comes pretty close. Throughout the day your makeup collects pollution, grime, and bacteria. And you can double the amount it collects if you have oily skin as the oiler your skin is, the easier it’ll stick. Leaving these unwanted impurities on the skin for longer than you have to can cause free radical damage, leading to a whole bunch of skin concerns such as irritation, premature ageing, and acne.

IT CAN ALSO SABOTAGE YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE AS THE INGREDIENTS AREN’T ABLE TO REACH VERY DEEP INTO THE SKIN IF THEY’RE BEING BLOCKED, AND WE KNOW YOU DON’T SPEND £££ ON SKINCARE FOR IT TO HANG OUT AT SURFACE LEVEL. SINCE YOU’RE NOW ITCHING TO FIND OUT HOW TO REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP PROPERLY, HERE ARE 5 EASY MAKEUP-REMOVAL TIPS THAT YOU CAN START DOING RN.

1. USE A CLEANSER TO DOUBLE UP ON SKINCARE

One of our favourite easy makeup removal tips for obvious reasons. The more you do for your skin, the more it’ll do for you. Take your skincare routine to the next level by using a cleanser with skin-boosting ingredients for removing makeup instead of your average makeup remover that only does exactly that. But make sure it’s a cleanser that claims to remove makeup, so you’ll need to read the small print to double-check. Just a few extra mins will save you from a few days of blemish-induced stress.

IMAGE SKINCARE CLEAR CELL CLARIFYING GEL CLEANSER

£32.00

The best makeup remover for oily and acne-prone skin. IMAGE Skincare Clear Cell Clarifying Gel Cleanser features 2% salicylic acid, a BHA that sweeps up excess oils for a shine-free finish whilst penetrating deep into the pores to remove dirt, oil, and stubborn makeup. And nope, it won’t go OTT and get rid of alllll traces of sebum and cause your sebaceous glands to double up production. That’d be counterproductive.

2. DITCH THE MAKEUP WIPES

We hope you can skip over this one, but if you’re still using makeup wipes to remove your makeup, you need to not, like immediately. Makeup wipes are pre-soaked in harsh chemicals that can strip the skin of its natural oils and stick around on its surface after use disrupting the pH balance, meaning your skin is likely to be left feeling dry and irritated afterwards. Plus, they just can’t remove makeup properly.

3. DON’T FORGET TO PUSH YOUR HAIRLINE BACK

Your hairline? Oh, only home to the forgotten-about makeup. NBD. Except it kinda is if you want to avoid clogged pores and breakouts. Slipping your hair into a ponytail or pushing it back with a headband before you start scrubbing may be the easiest of makeup removal tips to prevent those painful pimples from forming in your hairline.

4.PRE-SOAK THE EYE AREA

Mascaras, eyeliners, and eyeshadows can be tough to budge, which is great when you actually want them on your face, but when it comes to eye makeup removal at the end of the day, it’s not so great when you just want to make a beeline for your bed. While it’s tempting to try and remove eye makeup as quickly as possible, you need to slow down and give your eye area some TLC. Aggressively scrubbing eye makeup off can lead to irritation and even premature fine lines.

To make it easier, and therefore quicker, we recommend applying a generous amount of micellar water to 2 cotton pads, then gently pressing them over your eye area for a minute to give it time to dissolve the eye makeup before you start wiping with ease.

TRY: DERMACEUTIC OXYBIOME MICELLAR WATER

£35.00

Micellar water but make it ~skincare~. Featuring niacinamide (B3) to increase ceramides and strengthen the skin’s barrier, reduce inflammation, and regulate sebum production, while zinc gluconate has antiseptic properties. But the thing we’re most excited about? Dermaceutic OXYBIOME Micellar Water also supports the balance of the skin’s microbiome, which is a mixture of good and bad bacteria needed for optimal health.

5. ALWAYS USE LUKEWARM WATER

You might think using hot water will speed up the effects of your cleanser to remove your makeup, but it won’t. What it will do is strip the skin of its natural oils and compromise the skin’s barrier, making it more vulnerable to skin concerns. Our last easy makeup removal tip is to mix your chosen cleanser for removing makeup with lukewarm water to avoid any irritation.
