Fat freezing treatments 101: everything you need to know

Let’s talk about fat freezing treatments. Sometimes no matter how much exercise we do and how well we eat, fat cells are still determined to outlive our healthy lifestyles, and unfortunately most of us cave before they do. They rely on us talking ourselves out of surgical procedures because of the pain, risks and downtime, almost convincing us that we like the extra bit of fat on our bodies (even though we definitely don’t). But fat freezing treatments, or Cryolipolysis (the more technical term for it), are one non-surgical treatment stubborn fat cells didn’t see coming. In just one session of fat freezing, you can be well on your way to a sculpted waist, toned stomach, or chiselled jawline. In general, you will see a 20-30% permanent reduction in stubborn fat on the area treated.

What is fat freezing?

Fat freezing, sometimes referred to as the brand CoolSculpting or Body Contouring is a non-invasive alternative to liposuction or abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) that’s taking over the world by storm. It not only reduces fat, but it can also sculpt your body by freezing and killing fat cells which then cause the body to naturally remove them.

How does it work?

The treatment uses cold temperatures to destroy unwanted fat cells by freezing them to approximately -9 degrees where they can no longer survive. At this temperature, the fat cells begin to crystallise and spread out, reducing the number of fat cells found in the area. Over time these dead fat cells are removed through the body's wastage system.

What’s the difference between fat reduction and weight loss?

Many people use “fat reduction” and “weight loss” interchangeably, but this isn’t exactly correct as they actually mean two different things. Weight loss is a decline in overall body weight which can come from a loss of water, fat and muscle. Whereas fat loss, is a reduction in body fat only, which is usually the end goal. It’s healthier than weight loss as it can be dangerous to lose large amounts of water and muscle weight, which many of our bodily functions rely on to perform.

What are the benefits of fat freezing?

Targeted fat reduction

Each of our body’s store fat in different places, which is why when you put on weight you may notice it in your thighs while someone else sees it in their chin. While most of us would rather trade one area for another, we can’t choose where we put on fat, much like we can’t choose where we lose it. Fat freezing is designed to specifically target areas you wish to lose fat as well as stubborn fat cells that just won’t budge. It’s important to note, that body contouring or fat freezing is not designed for medically obese people. It’s designed for those, that typically look after themselves, but have that bit of stubborn fat they just can’t shift.

No scarring

This is a huge plus if we do say so ourselves. Surgical procedures always come with a risk of scarring and there’s no telling how well your skin will naturally heal until it’s time to do so. Fat freezing eliminates the risk of scarring altogether. It’s extremely beneficial to those who typically develop prominent scars or have keloids.

Fat cells are destroyed at warmer temperatures in comparison to the rest of the body’s cells, so fat freezing is perfectly safe as it doesn’t cause harm to any essential cells needed by the body to function.

Won’t disrupt your lifestyle  

Other fat reduction procedures demand weeks out of your schedule to heal and recover. But with fat freezing, there’s very little to no downtime. You may experience a little bruising, redness and mild soreness, but immediately after your session, you can resume life as normal.

Permanently remove fat cells

When you take on a diet or a new exercise routine, the fat cells decrease in size, but they still remain in the body making it easier for them to grow again if you go rogue. They’re patiently waiting for you to slip up and be filled back up again, and if they do, they usually become even more stubborn. What can I expect during a fat freezing treatment?

How do I prepare for a fat freezing treatment?

Get in good-ish shape

Fat freezing doesn’t mean you can totally skip out on breaking a sweat or eating a balanced diet, but it doesn’t mean turning up to your appointment with rock-hard abs either. To prepare for the treatment it’s important to get yourself in relatively good health and close to your ideal body shape as the treatment isn’t an effective way to lose fat on its own.

Forming healthy habits before fat freezing will also help you to keep excess fat off your body post-treatment.

Avoid anti-inflammatories

It’s best to stay clear of any anti-inflammatory medication 24 hours before and after fat freezing to minimise any bruising that may occur.

Look after your skin

It’s always a good idea to look after your skin but giving the area you wish to treat extra attention in the lead up to the treatment will make you feel more comfortable throughout. Using a daily moisturiser and sunscreen will allow the fat freezing device to smooth over the skin avoiding unnecessary tugging and irritation from dryness or sunburn.

What should I be doing post-treatment?

Choose loose clothing

For extra comfort, we recommend wearing loose fitted clothing in the area you had treated as your skin may feel more sensitive than usual.

Stay hydrated

This is to be expected after many treatments, but it’s particularly important for fat freezing as staying hydrated will enhance the effectiveness of your lymphatic system responsible for washing out the dead fat cells.

Ensure you’re getting enough sleep

Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep a night to stay well-rested. While fat freezing isn’t strenuous on the body, it doesn’t hurt to get the recommended amount of sleep to make sure your body can function properly, and the fat cells are removed smoothly.

A lack of sleep can also lead to hormone imbalances and poor choices, making you more likely to feel hungrier than usual and give in to your urges, resulting in more unwanted fat.

When will I begin to see results?

You’ll begin to notice a difference instantly after the treatment, but they’ll continue to improve over time, especially during 6-12 weeks post-treatment where the breakdown and removal of fat cells will be at its peak.

How many sessions will I need?

Am I a suitable candidate for fat freezing?

Fat freezing isn’t a solution to lose fat on its own, but rather a pretty cool tool to help you get there by eliminating stubborn areas of fat. Because of this, it’s not suitable for overweight or obese body types.

Pregnant women also aren’t qualified for fat freezing, whether it’s on the stomach or not. However, it’s an effective post-pregnancy treatment to get rid of difficult pregnancy fat without affecting the next pregnancy, which is always a risk with surgical procedures around the abdominal area. But it’s advised to wait at least 3 months after birth to be safe and see whether the unwanted fat begins to disappear on its own.
