HOW TO KEEP YOUR WELLNESS HIGH BUT EXPECTATIONS LOW IN 2021…

If you’re feeling a little nervous as we start the new year, we don’t blame you. Borders are closed, restrictions are higher than ever and there’s a new variant of Covid-19 is already threatening to cause more havoc than the first one. It’s all pretty stressful to be honest and unfortunately thinking that it will all magically be over in the next couple of weeks is probably the fastest way to a happiness nosedive.

Our Instagram feeds are full of ‘so long 2020’ and a lot of good riddance-s but many of us are slowly coming round to the reality that unfortunately the pandemic isn’t going to simply disappear and the pop of a champagne cork or party popper and the usual mantra of ‘New Year, new me’ just isn’t going to wash this time. Whilst our expectations might be at an all-time low, that doesn’t mean we should have a pessimistic outlook. We should still make plans (within the guidelines) that we can and look forward to what 2021 is likely to bring, its important to remember not to expect it to solve all our problems.

That’s why we’ve put together some really easy ways you can safeguard (and keep on top of!) your mental health and wellbeing going into this new year to help you deal whatever still might (yet) be thrown at us! Learning to adapt and overcome is the key to us all getting through this, together!

TIP 1 | REFLECT AND REVIEW

People often say the definition of insanity is performing the same actions repeatedly yet expecting a different outcome. The lockdown(s) of 2020/21 certainly have us all feeling like it’s Groundhog Day and now is not the time to be haranguing yourself about what you did ‘wrong’. Now is simply a great time to identify patterns and improve on them going into 2021. Simple questions to ask yourself can be: What worked well? What didn’t? With this in mind, what do I want to do differently? These can be applied to basic things like a neglected skincare or diet and exercise routine or to larger things such as relationships with friends and family.

TIP 2 | THOUGHTS AREN’T FACTS

Those of you more acquainted with regularly practicing mindfulness techniques should know this one and once again its simple. Our thoughts are often overtake our mind and shape our feelings and if your head is filled of thoughts with ‘next year isn’t going to get any better’, ‘I don’t know what I’ll do if we go into another lockdown’ or ‘this is never going to end’, then you’re probably not going to feel great about going into the next 12 months. Unfortunately, as humans we are hard wired to take more notice of negative thoughts and feelings than positives but one way to hack the system when presented with these thoughts are to ask yourself ‘is this thought helping me?’. The answer most likely will be a firm no and it can provide the circuit breaker to head back to a more positive frame of mind.

Whilst we’re talking about negative thoughts, it’s also important to take a close look at what you allow into your safe space. That’s right BBC News and WhatsApp notifications we’re talking about you. If regularly reading content around the pandemic brings your mood crashing down, then be very selective with when and how you tune in. Keeping informed is particularly important right now but it doesn’t need to be thrown in your face 500 times a day. Your mind is a delicate thing, get protective of it.

TIP 3 | GET OUTSIDE

Often the trick can be focusing on what we can still do as opposed to what we can’t. Combing exercise (which can be as simple as a daily walk) and getting outside is proven to have a dramatic effect on your mental and physical wellbeing. If you struggle to get away from your actual (or working from home) desk, then schedule it in like any other meeting and stick to it come rain or shine. You’ll thank us!
