Young LDN regular Dani Nicholls (@daninicholls) shares some of her learnings from her acne journey with us.
I didn’t have acne as a teenager, it hit me after turning 21. Which was both a blessing and a curse, as I was able to enjoy my teenage years without the aggro that acne brings, however being in my 20’s with some disposable income I was also able to keep the lights on in department stores, trying every product that promised to get rid of acne and remove acne scars.
I’m out of the woods now, but there’s a few things I wish I knew as a young adult with acne that I know now.
I wanted to share some of my learnings from my skin journey with the Young Life.
1. Stop buying so many damn products!
I was the product junkie. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll of seen me recently giving away BAGS of skincare products I paid for that didn’t deliver on the promise or just weren’t cut out for the acne I had. Please if you’re reading this, get advice from an expert like the tribe at Young LDN and don’t waste your money on products that aren’t going to work.
2. Let the professionals help
I’m a wannabe lady of leisure (interesting as I honestly have no chill) but I’ve always taken my facials very seriously - thank you for installing this in me mum!
There is only a certain amount we can clean our face ourselves as an average joe. Let the professionals get stuck in and always ask for aftercare tips! I love The 40 Peel Bar facial at Young LDN for a quick fix which leaves you with a good clean and glow after! My advice… Take a look at your expenditures, if you just cut out the one coffee from your favourite overpriced coffee shop a week then you can enjoy one of these a month instead.
3. When you apply face wash, massage it into your skin for AT LEAST 1 minute
I learned this tip on Twitter from a very well renowned aesthetician in LA - oh my god. Just do it. You will see the difference in 3 days.
My poor boyfriend, I was horrified when I saw how quickly he thought he could wash his face, the minimum 1 min rule applies in my house!
4. Don’t put your phone on your face.
This honestly repulses me now, just think about the bacteria. You wouldn’t use a dirty towel to dry your face, so why would you chat for hours a day with a bacteria fest on the side of your face. Go for headphones always! If you are going to use your phone, make sure you are constantly cleaning it to avoid putting all that nasty bacteria directly onto your skin!
5. Less is more.
I knew I needed my skin to clear up again to regain my confidence and sass. You will too. Start by going to see a skincare specialist like the Tribe at Young LDN, they really can help in so many ways. Plus, if they can’t help, they’ll tell you to go see your GP or refer you to a dermatologist who can help you. Trust me, you will be comfortable in your skin again before you know it. You are not alone in this journey!
