HOW TO TACKLE AND TREAT ADULT ACNE

You made it through your teenage years blemish-free and thought you’d dodged the acne bullet, only to find it resurfacing in adulthood. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Adult acne is one of the most common skin concerns we treat at Young LDN, and it affects more people than you might expect.

Unlike teen acne, which is often triggered by puberty and hormonal shifts, adult acne can be driven by a range of factors, from stress and sleep to lifestyle choices and environmental aggressors. And while it might feel frustrating, the good news is: there are highly effective ways to manage and treat it.

Let’s take a closer look at what causes adult acne, the different forms it can take, and how we can help you achieve clear, healthy skin, without the guesswork.

WHAT CAUSES ADULT ACNE?

At the heart of adult acne is often excess sebum production and clogged pores. While “clogged pores” may sound like a skincare cliché, they’re one of the main culprits behind all acne breakouts. Our skin is covered in tiny openings that connect to sebaceous glands, which produce an oily substance called sebum. In normal amounts, sebum is beneficial—it keeps the skin moisturised and helps retain hydration.

However, when the skin is producing too much oil (often due to hormonal fluctuations), dead skin cells and bacteria can become trapped inside the follicle. This leads to inflammation and—yes—a breakout.

But it’s not just what’s happening beneath the surface. Lifestyle factors like stress, diet, sleep quality, and even gut health can impact your skin’s balance, triggering or worsening adult acne.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACNE

Understanding the type of acne you’re experiencing is the first step towards effective treatment. Here’s a quick guide:

COMEDONES

These small, skin-coloured bumps are either open (blackheads) or closed (whiteheads). Contrary to popular belief, blackheads aren’t caused by dirt—they’re the result of oxidised melanin.

MILIA

Often called ‘milk spots’, these are tiny cysts that form when dead skin cells become trapped. They typically resolve naturally over time.

PAPULES

Red, inflamed bumps that don’t contain pus. These are best left alone—picking at them can cause irritation and scarring.

PUSTULES

Once papules develop a pus-filled centre, they become pustules. These are what most people picture when they think of a traditional spot.

NODULES

Deep, painful lumps that form beneath the skin. Nodules occur when the infection spreads into deeper layers of the skin.

CYSTS

Similar to nodules but softer due to the pus content. Cysts can be painful and are best treated professionally to avoid long-term damage.

HOW TO TREAT ADULT ACNE

1. PRIORITISE STRESS MANAGEMENT

When we’re stressed, the body increases its production of cortisol and androgens—hormones that can directly impact sebum levels. Taking time to unwind, move your body, and process emotions through journaling or mindfulness can help to reduce stress-related breakouts.

2. SUPPORT YOUR SKIN THROUGH DIET

High-glycaemic foods, refined carbs and sugars can spike insulin levels, triggering excess oil production. Consider working with a Nutritionist to assess potential food intolerances or inflammatory triggers. We also recommend our Gut Health Massage treatments with holistic skin expert Alicia, to support your internal and external skin health.

3. GET QUALITY SLEEP

A lack of sleep weakens your immune system, leaving your skin more vulnerable to inflammation and breakouts. Prioritising good sleep hygiene allows your skin the time it needs to heal and regenerate.

4. STICK TO A CONSISTENT SKINCARE ROUTINE

Consistency is key. A good routine doesn’t need to be complicated—it just needs to be consistent. At Young LDN, we offer complimentary consultations to help you identify what your skin really needs, and design a personalised plan that fits your lifestyle.
